It’s that time of year again, when over 100 culinary, wine and cocktail professionals gather across Hawaiʻi Island, Maui and Oʻahu for Hawaiʻi’s largest food festival.

This year marks the 15th annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival (HFWF), an event dedicated to supporting local agriculture, growing the hospitality industry and positioning Hawaiʻi as a world-class culinary destination.

The theme of this year’s festival is FEAST — an acronym for Food, Education, Agriculture, Sustainability and Tourism. Events will explore the connection between these sectors, highlighting each as a foundational pillar of the festival.

Ready to learn something new, get inspired and eat and drink your way through Hawaiʻi? Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Hawaii Food & Wine Festival.

When is this year’s Hawaii Food & Wine Festival?

HFWF spans three weekends from October 17 to November 2, across three islands—Hawaiʻi  Island, Maui, and Oʻahu.

Waimea, Hawaiʻi Island – Oct. 17-18

Kāʻanapali, Maui – Oct. 24-26

Honolulu, Oʻahu Oct. 30-Nov. 2

According to HFWF, event proceeds have contributed over $5 million over the past 15 years to culinary education, agriculture and sustainability initiatives in Hawaiʻi, as well as supporting hospitality workers during times of need. Courtesy of Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. Photo by Keoni Fernandez.

Where is the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival held?

Prepare to be wined and dined in multiple destinations across Hawaiʻi. Here are the event locations by island:

Hawaiʻi Island: Mauna Kea Golf Course and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Oʻahu: ʻAlohilani Resort Waikīkī Beach, Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort, Hawaiʻi Convention Center, Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa and Halekulani Hotel.

This year’s culinary lineup consists of over 100 world-renowned chefs and culinary leaders, including Aarón Sánchez, Chris Cosentino, Andrew Le, Robynne Maii, Masaharu Morimoto, Sheldon Simeon, Nancy Silverton and Marcel Vigneron. Additionally, Master sommeliers Chris Ramelb and Chuck Furuya will be pouring some of their favorite wines and local mixologists will be shaking up their latest cocktails.

Guests must be 21 years or older to attend HFWF events. There are no children of any age permitted.

What should I wear to the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival?

It depends, some events are walk-around tastings, while others are sit down brunches and gala dinners. There are both casual events held in the afternoon and evening events with opportunities to dress up. See our list of scheduled events below with dress codes.

34 mixologists from across the country will join this year’s HFWF roster. Pictured here is Kuulei Akuna, mixologist and co-owner of Lady Elaine and Little Plum, last year on Oʻahu.

What are the best events at the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival?

Highlights this year include a tribute to the late Chef Charles Phan – a pioneer of modern Vietnamese cuisine and a Southern-style seafood brunch hosted by celebrity chef Aarón Sánchez. This is also the first year HFWF will be offering a one-day conference for industry professionals with 56 top thought leaders across all sectors of the hospitality, agriculture and culinary industries.

Who hosts the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival?

James Beard Award-winning chefs Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong co-founded the The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival® in 2011. HFWF is a program of the Hawaii Ag & Culinary Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating world-class culinary events to support culinary education in community colleges and four-year universities in Hawaiʻi. Its mission is to “elevate Hawai‘i’s culinary and agricultural sectors, enriching both the visitor industry and local community.”

Where do the proceeds from the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival go?

Proceeds from HFWF help to fund culinary scholarships, hands-on training programs and sustainable agricultural initiatives that connect students with local farmers. Last month, The Hawai‘i Ag & Culinary Alliance – the parent organization of HFWF – announced it awarded $143,805 in proceeds from HFWF “to support culinary, agricultural and community organizations across the state” bringing its total investment to over $5 million since the festival launched in 2011.

According to an August press release, in 2024 HFWF supported the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges Culinary Programs at six campuses across the state, Imua Family Services, the Maui County Farm Bureau, the Hawai‘i Agricultural Foundation, the James Beard Foundation, Central Kitchen, the Cottage Industry to Commercial Enterprise Scholarship, the Wahiawā Value-Added Product Development Center’s ‘Āina to Mākeke program, CIP x CIA Workforce Development Scholarship Fund and Kōkua Restaurant & Hospitality Fund.

Do the chefs at Hawaii Food & Wine Festival use local ingredients?

Yes, all chefs are provided access to local ingredients to use in their dishes for each event. This year HFWF, in collaboration with ‘Ōuli Farms, also introduced its new Chefʻs Garden on Hawaiʻi Island—a seed-to-table initiative which will also provide ingredients for events. ʻŌuli Farms’ grows over 1,077 organic plants, has planted 325 trees for reforestation efforts and has donated over 6,000 pounds of fresh produce to the community since its inception.

Chefs participating in the Chefʻs Garden initiative include:

• Peter Abarcar, Jr., Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

• Allen Hess, FORC

• Brian Hirata, Na‘au Hilo

• Jayson Kanekoa, Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

• Roy Yamaguchi, Roy Yamaguchi Group of Restaurants

If you’re planning a Maui honeymoon, there’s no better person to get advice from than Ellie Erickson, Maui Coast Hotel’s senior sales manager. With a passion for hospitality and a deep love for the island she now calls home, Erickson has curated the perfect five-day itinerary for couples looking to experience Maui’s magic—sunset strolls, waterfall hikes and ocean adventures all included.

Originally from California, Erickson made the move to Maui in 2019 and has never looked back. She has lived in Kihei since moving to Maui, but has also worked in Kāʻanapali.

Part of Erickson’s role at Maui Coast Hotel is ensuring guests have seamless, memorable stays. She plans meaningful Maui visits by coordinating group bookings, creating memorable experiences, and making the hotel feel like home for every type of traveler.

Tucked in sunny Kihei, Maui Coast Hotel is a gem in South Maui’s vibrant landscape. Just steps from the beach, the hotel is surrounded by top-rated eateries, locally owned shops and plenty of outdoor adventures from paddleboarding and snorkeling to scenic hikes.

With solar energy systems, EV charging stations, and eco-conscious practices built into its daily operations, the hotel embodies the spirit of mālama ʻāina — caring for the land. “We recently completed renovations that brought a fresh, upscale feel to the property,” says Ellie. “But we’ve preserved the laid-back, friendly vibe that makes South Maui so beloved.”

One of Erickson’s favorite parts about living on Maui is the sense of community, natural beauty and slower pace of life. She said she loves going on walks with her baby, hiking with friends, trying local restaurants and going out to hear live music. She also volunteers with local organizations regularly.

“Maui is a place where people take care of each other, and that aloha spirit is something I feel every day,” Erickson said.

A Perfect 5-Day Honeymoon with Maui Coast Hotel as Your Hub

From enjoying romantic sunset views on Kihei beaches to picturesque waterfalls on the Road to Hana, this five-day itinerary is your honeymoon guide to experiencing the island’s best beaches, bites and scenic sights at a comfortable pace.

How to Choose the Best Hotel in Maui

Booking the best hotel in Maui isn’t just about five stars — it’s about how a place fits your travel rhythm.

  • Location matters. Think about what you want to do: whale watching in Lāhainā, hiking in Hāna, snorkeling in Kīhei, or simply relaxing. Staying nearby saves you time on Maui’s winding roads.
  • Trip type. Are you planning a honeymoon? A family escape? A solo surf expedition? Choose a hotel that matches your energy and goals.
  • Choose amenities that match your lifestyle: Families may want kid-friendly pools, suite-style rooms, or free breakfasts. Couples might look for spas, fine dining, or private lanais with ocean views. Adventurers often prefer easy beach access, in-room laundry, or quick check-in/out.
  • Vibe check: Maui is as chill or luxe as you make it. Some resorts buzz with activity, while others whisper serenity. Know what you’re walking into.

Also important:

  • Parking fees, resort fees, and cancellation policies vary widely. Checking for a resort fee can save you substantial amounts daily, making some hotels more budget-friendly.
  • Use trusted booking platforms like Expedia or Booking.com to compare.
  • Browse real traveler photos — not just the glossy professional shots — to get a true feel for the place.

Still unsure? Our Maui travel guide offers in-depth planning help.

Best Areas to Stay in Maui

Maui isn’t just one vibe — it’s many. Picking the right area is key to unlocking your perfect vacation. Here’s a breakdown of where to stay depending on your travel style:

  • Lāhainā & Kāʻanapali (West Maui): This area is popular for first-time visitors thanks to its mix of luxury resorts, walkable beach towns, and oceanfront restaurants. Ka’anapali Beach is a prime location here, offering direct beachfront access, beautiful views, and a range of family-friendly activities. You’ll find many of the best value hotels in Maui Hawaii here, plus easy access to snorkeling, luaus, and sunsets.
  • Wailea & Mākena (South Maui): Known for its upscale resorts, world-class golf, and calm beaches, Wailea offers a more relaxed, elegant feel. If you want spa days, romantic dinners, or a serene beach experience, this is it.
  • Kīhei: Budget-friendly, local, and laid-back, Kīhei is perfect for families or anyone wanting to be close to the beach without the resort prices. There’s a strong community vibe and access to excellent snorkeling beaches.
  • Hāna: On Maui’s lush east side, Hāna offers tranquility and natural beauty far from the crowds. It’s not for nightlife seekers — but if serenity, waterfalls, and rainforest hikes call your name, staying here is unforgettable.
  • Kahului/ Wailuku: Often overlooked as just an arrival point, this central area is great for business travel, exploring Upcountry Maui, or overnight before catching a Haleakalā sunrise. You won’t find many luxury hotels, but you will find convenience.

There’s something irresistibly magical about a Maui sunset. It may be the way the light dances across the water or the way the sky lights up like a watercolor painting. Maybe it’s that golden silence just before the stars appear — when locals and visitors alike stand frozen in place to watch the day surrender to the night. Or perhaps it’s the simple pleasure of warm sand between your toes, watching the sunset with the one you love.

With its amazing location, Maui is heaven on Earth for sunseekers. From the Haleakalā summit to the serene shores of Kahana, these are the best places to witness a breathtaking sunset in Maui — along with some tips to make the experience unforgettable. Add these hot spots (pun intended) to your itinerary to catch the best sunsets in town.

What Makes a Maui Sunset Special?

Maui, Hawaii, is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, which attract visitors from around the world. The island’s unique geography, with its volcanic mountains and tropical climate, creates a perfect setting for stunning sunsets.

A Maui sunset is more than just the close of a day; it’s a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates the soul. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors — soft pinks, fiery oranges, deep purples, and tranquil blues. This breathtaking display is often accompanied by a warm, golden glow that bathes the landscape, creating a romantic and peaceful atmosphere. Whether you’re standing on a beach with your toes in the sand or perched high above the clouds at Haleakalā, the beauty of a Maui sunset is an unforgettable experience.

Why Maui is a Paradise for Sunset Chasers

Maui sunsets are a feast to the eyes, as the sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors from pale pinks to blazing oranges. The West Coast of the island offers numerous vantage points to observe these stunning spectacles, and therefore it is a paradise for sunset lovers. With its tropical warm weather, Maui is an ideal destination for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, surfing, and hiking, which can be fulfilling daytime activities, followed by a relaxing sunset-watching experience to usher in the evening.

Best Time to See Beautiful Sunsets in Maui

The summer months (June through August) provide the best viewing of sunsets in Maui when skies are usually clear and sunsets are more dramatic. But great sunsets during the winter months (December to February) can be enjoyed too, with a bonus of cooler weather and reduced crowds. Make sure to get to your preferred viewpoint early and claim a spot, because sunsets may draw big crowds. Quiet hours on the island are from 10 p.m. until 8 a.m., ensuring a peaceful environment for sunset watchers.

The glow of sunset is reflected on a Maui beach.

Best Viewing Locations for Maui Sunsets

Haleakalā National Park: Sunset Above the Clouds

There’s sunrise at Haleakalā National Park, and then there’s sunset at Maui Haleakalā — an underrated, less-crowded, and equally mesmerizing experience. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, at over 10,000 feet above sea level, you’ll feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world as clouds roll beneath your feet and the sun dips into a sea of color. Evening strolls are accompanied by stunning scenery of the surrounding tropical jungle, with beautiful orange and purple hues. Haleakalā National Park’s off-peak hours are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., guaranteeing a serene experience.

Take one of the trail-marked routes for the best views of the setting sun, like Halemau’u Haleakala Overlook Trail or Sliding Sands Trail (Keonehe’ehe’e Trail). The two sections are divided with the option to hike either side based on difficulty. Dress in layers, it gets cold at altitude, even in summer, and arrive early to stake a spot. Because sunrise is by reservation only, sunset is an open invitation, and perfect for those wanting to sleep in a little.

Travel Tips:

  • Bring a blanket or wear extra layers — temperatures drop quickly.
  • Pack snacks or dinner to enjoy picnic-style.
  • Don’t rush off after sunset — the stargazing is also world-class.

@mscator: “Catching a sunrise (or sunset) at Haleakalā, Maui’s highest peak at just over 10,000 feet above sea level, is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience…”

Kāʻanapali Beach: Classic and Romantic, Walking Distance to Amenities

Just north of Lāhainā lies Kāʻanapali Beach, one of the top beaches in Maui and one of the most iconic sunset views. As the sun starts to set, tiki torches are fired up, and traditional Hawaiian music wafts through the air from surrounding resorts. Ceremonial cliff diving at Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock) injects a cultural fix into the spectacle.

For a front-row seat, grab a cocktail at one of the oceanfront restaurants or sink your toes in the sand. Beach chairs are set up, increasing your convenience and comfort for a laid-back, romantic vibe.

Kahana Sunset Maui: Underrated and Peaceful

Tucked between Kapalua and Kāʻanapali, Kahana Sunset Maui is a gem that flies under the radar. This small beach community has a handful of accommodations with a less frenetic atmosphere and fewer crowds, perfect for travelers who want to escape the commotion. With its west-facing location, Kahana offers unobstructed ocean and sunset views as the sun dips into the horizon.

If you’re staying at Maui Sunset Resort, or anywhere else along West Maui’s shoreline, Kahana is a short drive — or scenic walk — away. And, the fact that Kahana offers free parking only makes it that much more convenient for visitors.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for the green flash — a rare natural phenomenon that appears as a quick burst of green light on the horizon. Maui’s clear skies and ocean views make it one of the best places to catch this magical moment.

Mākena Cove (Secret Beach): A Photographer’s Paradise

Mākena Cove, also known as Secret Beach, is perhaps the most beautiful place in Maui to photograph a sunset. Surrounded by lava rocks and shadowed by palms, it’s what you picture when you think of a postcard from Hawaii. The golden hour here is warm and gentle, perfect for engagement photo shoots, proposals, or just enjoying the peace. Mākena Cove is easily accessible from Kihei, making it a convenient spot for photographers.

Note: There is not much parking and the beach is flanked by private homes — be respectful and tread lightly.

Lahaina Harbor: Take a Maui Sunset Cruise

Hungry for a sunset with a side of adventure? Book a Maui sunset cruise from Lāhainā Harbor. Catamarans, sailboats, and even old-fashioned schooners offer evening sails with pupu (appetizers), tropical cocktails, and live entertainment in some cases. Lahaina Harbor’s great location makes it an ideal starting point for a dreamy sunset cruise.

You’ll drift down the coast as you watch the sunset over nearby Molokaʻi or Lānaʻi — often with dolphins or humpback whales as party guests (in winter especially). A hot tub is provided on some cruises to elevate the luxury even further.

Top Sunset Cruises:

  • Trilogy Excursions
  • Pacific Whale Foundation
  • Teralani Sailing Adventures

@LadyMaxwell: “I had a ball when I visited Maui Sunset Cruise and jet skiing.”

Wailea Beach Path: A Sunset Stroll Within Walking Distance

The paved coastal path winding through Wailea offers front-row views of Maui’s southern coastline. Start your walk about an hour before sunset to catch the changing colors over the Pacific, and end your stroll at a beach bar or upscale Wailea restaurant. The adjacent beaches and tidepools make it very family-friendly and great for small adventurers.

Kapalua Bay: Cozy Cove, Big Views

Sunset aficionados flock here for its photogenic beauty. Sheltered by lava-rock outcroppings, Kapalua Bay is a daydream for snorkelers and a serene retreat at sunset. Its crescent shape naturally frames romantic shots, and its calm waters reflect the sky’s color-changing hue like a mirror.

Kapalua Bay’s accessibility is the reason why this sunset spot is a crowd-pleasing favorite. Pack a towel, chair, umbrella, some poke to-go, and get down on the beach while the sky performs its show. For people who need more excitement, the adjacent tennis courts provide a good opportunity to get active amidst the beautiful surroundings.

Kihei: Accessible, Laid-Back Charm

Kihei is another prime location to catch a Maui sunset on the island’s stunning Southwest Coast. A charming coastal town known for its pristine beaches, lush greenery, and vibrant cultural scene, guests can dive into a variety of activities, from snorkeling and surfing to paddleboarding in crystal clear waters. The town itself is a treasure trove of shops, restaurants, and cafes, perfect for leisurely strolls and discovering local flavors. Nature enthusiasts will love visiting the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, while adventure seekers can embark on a thrilling whale-watching tour. With so much to see and do, Kihei is the perfect base for your Maui adventure, and with free parking and easy access to rental cars, exploring Kihei and its surroundings is a breeze.

Bonus: Love a Day Trip? Don’t Miss Haleiwa

While not actually in Maui, Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park is a great day trip to Oahu for island-hoppers. The Haleiwa North Shore beach is renowned for both sunrise serenity and breathtaking sunsets. You might even spot honu (green sea turtles) basking in the golden light. Kahului Airport, easily accessible for travelers from Maui, is also a 30-minute drive away, so you can easily reach Oahu by air or boat. Be sure to check the Haleiwa weather to time your visit right and while you’re there, treat yourself to a post-sunset dinner at one of the many restaurants, like Haleiwa Beach House or Uncle Bo’s.

Sunset from a secret cove on the tropical island of Maui, Hawaii

Tips for Getting the Perfect View

To make the most of your Maui sunset experience, keep these tips in mind:

  • Plan ahead: The early bird gets the worm and the best spots fill up fast.
  • Face west: Self-explanatory, but necessary. West and Southwest beaches provide more favorable angles.
  • Check your watch: Sunset times change seasonally. During summer, the sun sets around 7:15 p.m.; during winter it’s around 5:45 p.m.
  • Bring a camera: Or leave the phone at home and take in the moment.
  • Free WiFi: Most beaches have free WiFi if you want to share the experience.
  • Respect quiet hours: Maintaining a peaceful environment ensures a pleasant evening for all.

Where to Stay for Awesome Sunsets with an Ocean View

Want a front-row seat from your lanai (porch)? Book at a west-facing property, such as:

Maui Sunset Resort: Aptly named for a reason. These oceanfront condos offer postcard-worthy sunset views, spacious tropical lawns perfect for a barefoot stroll, and easy beach access right across the street. Ideal for couples and families, this low-key gem puts you near Kīhei’s best snorkeling, dining, and golden-hour magic.

Napili Kai Beach Resort: Just steps from the calm, crescent-shaped Napili Bay, this classic West Maui retreat offers old-school aloha with modern comforts. Think palm-shaded hammocks, beachside breakfasts, and snorkeling with sea turtles just offshore. Sunsets here? Unreal.

Aston Kāʻanapali Shores: A lively, kid-friendly resort with two pools, beach access, and a location right in the heart of Kāʻanapali action. You’re minutes from Whalers Village, ocean activities, and some of Maui’s best shave ice. Perfect for families looking to stay active — and stay cool in comfort.

Why Maui’s Sunsets Steal the Show

Every island in Hawaii has its own special beauty to share, but there is something deeply soulful to the way light caresses Maui. Perhaps it is the intensity of the Pacific Ocean meeting volcanic peaks. Perhaps it is the joy of sharing that perfect moment with someone you love — or even with a perfect stranger sitting quietly on a beach. As the sky fades to indigo and the first stars appear, there’s a collective exhale. The day ends, the island rests, and the ocean hums its lullaby.

@TomatoCross: “Every Maui sunset ???? is unreal ????????❤

So pack your camera, your favorite blanket, and a little patience. Maui’s greatest show begins every evening— no ticket required.

Close your eyes and imagine for a moment you’re watching the sunset in Maui. You’re calm and relaxed, with toes in the sand, and the fiery colors of orange and yellow are reflected in patches of slick wet sand where waves lap at the shore.

As stars begin to poke through the sky, you walk past rows of tiki torches before reaching in your pocket, grabbing a key and waltzing right into your room.

That’s the dreamy, evening reality at beachfront hotels on Maui, where your room is just steps from golden sands and fiery sunsets each night. There’s an air of luxury, convenience and comfort to staying right on the beach, although with so many Maui beachfront hotels, trying to choose the best option can sometimes seem overwhelming.

Kaanapali and Wailea are Hot Spots for Maui Beachfront Hotels

Image of Kaanapali Beach Hotel.
Photo: Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

If you’re researching Maui’s best beachfront hotels, the resort scene is centered on two main spots: Kā‘anapali and Wailea. About 45 minutes apart by car, these visitor enclaves are not only home to lavish, oceanfront resorts but are steps from golden stretches of sand that have made Maui world famous.

Wailea Resort is Home to Luxury Beachfront Hotels

Wailea Resort, in South Maui, boasts four different popular, white sand beaches that are connected by a coastal path. The furthest south is Polo Beach, home to The Fairmont Kea Lani, which twists toward the sky with swirling white spires pulled straight from an Arabian fairytale. Every room at the Kea Lani is actually a miniature suite, providing a spacious sense of comfort along with the oceanfront setting. Next up is The Four Seasons Wailea and famous Wailea Beach, which was named the #1 beach in America in 1999. Also fronting Wailea Beach is the Grand Wailea Resort, where you can swim in Maui’s best swimming pool and relax in Hawaiʻi’s largest spa.

The next beach north — Ulua Beach — is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving and is home to the Wailea Beach Resort Marriott and the exclusive Wailea Beach Villas. The Andaz Maui, on Mokapu Beach, has a three-tiered infinity pool with popular bars and a sweeping view of the sunset and is where the luxurious Wailea Resort officially comes to an end.

Kihei Boasts Beautiful Beaches and Beachfront Condos

If you drive north from Wailea resort up into neighboring Kīhei, the development changes from high-end resorts to rows of beachfront condos. The Mana Kai Maui, along Keawakapu Beach, is only a ten-minute walk away from the start of the Wailea beach path, and Hale Pau Hana is conveniently located between Kam I and Kam II beaches. While condos don’t have the same sense of glamor as the glitzy Wailea resorts, they’re also within walking distance of restaurants and shops that are a fraction of the cost of Wailea.

There are also beachfront condos in North Kīhei, though the beaches here aren’t as nice for snorkeling and the afternoons can be windy. That said, the morning hours are usually spectacular, and some condos — like The Maui Sunset — are set on beachfront Waipuʻilani Park where tennis courts and a large grassy lawn face out toward the sunset each night. Menehune Shores is an oceanfront condo that’s steps from Kalepolepopo Beach Park and features an ancient Hawaiian fishpond that’s perfect for families with young children. To stay at a Maui beachfront hotel on the island’s longest beach, there are numerous options along Sugar Beach, which at five miles long isn’t great for snorkeling (and afternoons can be windy) but is perfect for taking morning strolls and watching the sunset each night. Options include Kohea Kai Resort Maui at the southern end of the strip, to Sugar Beach Resort in the middle of the beach and Ma‘alaea up north.

There are Only Three Beachfront Options in Lahaina

If you’d prefer to be closer to Kā‘anapali and Lahaina’s shopping and dining, many of Maui’s best beachfront hotels are located in West Maui.

Despite Lahaina’s popularity, the only real options for beachfront hotels are Lahaina Shores at the southern end of town, the Puamana vacation rentals and the Pu‘unoa Beach Estates on small but popular “Baby Beach.” All are within walking distance of bustling Front Street and are set on relaxing beaches, but none offer any resort-like amenities or snorkeling right from shore.

Beachfront Hotels Range From Modern to Authentic on Kaanapali Beach

Image of Kaanapali Beach Hotel.
Photo: Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

For that you’ll need to head ten minutes north to famous Kā‘anapali Beach, which was named the #1 beach in America in 2003. Whether it’s snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, parasailing, whale watching, surfing or beach volleyball, you can find it happening along Kā‘anapali Beach, in addition to restaurants and shops.

On the southern end of the beach is the Hyatt, which is popular with families and groups. On the northern end, the Sheraton Maui fronts Pu‘u Keka‘a — also known as “Black Rock” — which is the site of some of Maui’s best snorkeling. Other resorts on Kā‘anapali Beach are the spacious condos at Kā‘anapali Ali‘i, the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, as well as The Westin Maui, The Whaler and Kā‘anapali Beach Hotel. Whereas the Hyatt and Westin have multiple waterslides and modern, poolside bars, Kā‘anapali Beach Hotel is a bit more authentic (and lower-priced), where the focus is on fusing a laidback vacation with traditional Hawaiian culture.

Kahekili Beach is the Site of a Few Hidden Gems

Image of Royal Lahaina Resort.
Photo: Royal Lahaina Resort.

Though most of the action in Kā‘anapali is centered around Kā‘anapali Beach, a growing number of resorts now line the next beach further north. Known as Kahekili Beach (or “Airport Beach” to locals), here’s where you’ll find the Royal Lahaina with its nightly oceanfront lūʻau, and the Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Villas as well as Honua Kai Resort.

Napili Bay is an Enclave of Beachfront Condos and Resorts

Up on the island’s northwestern tip, Napili Bay is another enclave of oceanfront condos and resorts, with the Napili Kai Beach Resort being one of the best options for visiting families and groups. The snorkeling at Napili Bay can be excellent, and neighboring Kapalua Bay was named the #1 beach in America 1991. In winter the surf can get very large, so the best snorkeling and swimming here are from late spring through summer.

Luxury Defines Kapalua’s Beachfront Resort

Image of Kapalua, Maui.
Kapalua, Maui.

Finally, some of the best beachfront hotels in Maui are in Kapalua Resort — a pine-lined sanctuary of golf courses and sand on the island’s northwestern coast. The Montage Kapalua Bay is an ultra-luxurious oceanfront resort with one of the island’s best spas, while The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is a five-minute walk from D.T. Fleming Beach, which was named the #1 beach in America in 2006.

How to Decide Where to Stay on Maui

With so many different options out there, how do you choose which beachfront resort is best for your trip to Maui?

Budget, of course, is usually a factor, and the best deals are usually at condos in Kīhei, Honokowai and Napili. Proximity to activities is also important, and if you want to be able to paddleboard or snorkel by just walking out of your room, resorts in Wailea and Kā‘anapali are often priced higher but carry the convenience of activities right out your front door. For a happy medium between the two, consider condos on Napili Bay and condos in Kīhei between Keawakapu Beach and Kamaole I.

A Note About the Maui Beach Hotel

As a word of caution, there’s a hotel on Maui called the Maui Beach Hotel that’s technically right on the beach — but it’s located inside of Kahului Harbor in an industrial setting that doesn’t offer any snorkeling, activities, or swimming. It is, however, just five minutes away from Kahului Airport, and is an affordable Maui beachfront hotel for travelers who don’t need any amenities and are visiting the island on a budget.
